AER is a private nonprofit organization incorporated in 1942 by the Secretary of War and the Army Chief of Staff. AER's mission is to provide emergency financial assistance to Soldiers, both active and retired, and their immediate family members.

AER's philosophy has always been, if we err, it will be on the side of the Soldier. Recently they expanded their philosophy to include finding a way to say yes (to Soldiers). This, however, does not negate the rules of eligibility. AER wants to ensure funds are getting to the Soldiers. AER assistance may come in the form of a no-interest loan or a grant. Assistance is based upon eligibility and need. Each request is considered on a case-by-case basis.

Common requests for AER assistance include, but are not limited to: Emergency Travel Funeral Expenses Routine POV Repair/Maintenance and Safety items (will always be processed as a loan) The preclusion of privation (food, clothing, shelter) Utilities, Rent/Mortgage, Medical, Dental, Education, Other.

Other forms of AER assistance include: $200 Grant to Wounded Soldiers Widows of AD Soldiers provided free lifetime membership in Armed Forces Services Corporation (AFSC) (insurance) Cdr/1SG approval of up to $1000 Spouse education expanded Army-wide Maximum Scholarship provided to children of Soldiers who died on Active Duty.

The Army Emergency Relief Officer (AERO) and Assistant (AAERO) provide financial assistance to eligible Soldiers (active or retired) and their families with Unit Commander's approval. AER provides emergency assistance to widows and orphans of deceased active duty or retired soldiers. Applies to: (1) Active Duty personnel (except for Navy and Marine personnel as Navy Relief is available at MCAS). (2) US Army Reserves (USAR) on continuous duty for more than 30 days and their family members.
