Your Personal Financial Management Specialist at Personal & Professional Development is here to help you and your family members (active duty, retired, DoD and NAF Civilian Personnel) learn more about basic financial management skills and to help you improve your level of Financial Fitness through personalized budgeting, goal setting, savings, investing, use of credit and debt, planning for major purchases, preparing for major financial challenges, risk coverage, tax planning, and retirement planning.

Class Descriptions

Blended Retirement System
• Blended Retirement Information

Budgeting Class
Teaches the principles of how to build an effective budget. Participants are asked to bring their most recent Leave Earning Statement (LES) and last 30 days’ worth of checking accounts so they can begin building their budget in class.

Car Buying
1.5 hour class teaches about the four separate stages of car buying and has a special segment on negotiating. This class is perfect for everyone, from first time car buyers to someone on their third or fourth car purchase.

Credit and Debt Management
Focuses on credit reports and scores and the best practices to build them. It also covers how to effectively tackle the debt you may already have in the most constructive and cost efficient way.

Command Financial Specialist (CFS) Training
Open to E6 and above, this class is offered to meet the MCO 1700.37 mandate that units have one CFS for every 75 Marines by 11 December 2017. CFS training will provide candidates with the information, tools, and skills to offer budget counseling, debt management and credit score information, Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) education, and adult-learner instructional techniques.

Holiday Spending
Will help you with your holiday spending plan. This class highlights the challenges shoppers face and the true cost of the holidays including: feeding people, decorating, gift wrap, postage, gifts, travel, office parties, etc. The holidays always seem to put a hole in people’s budget and this class is intended to provide participants with the knowledge and an effective plan to keep their budget level.

Personal Finance Basics
Teaches all the basic information about personal finance for military families. It covers reading an Leave Earning Statement (LES), effective budget, credit and debt management, and Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) information. This class is perfect for those who want to take charge of their finances and want the information to grow their own financial standing. Participants are provided a workbook to take home to start their financial journey.

Stock Market and Investing
Will help those who are looking for investing outside of the Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) and are ready to venture into the world of investing and want to have the information necessary to try it on their own or have a basic understanding before seeing a financial advisor. We will cover the different asset classes, how the market works, and long-term goal planning.

TSP, IRA, 401(k) Plans
Will educate participants on the differences between employer-sponsored plans and Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) and how to effectively use them to increase your retirement savings and net worth. The Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) will have the main focus and we will go over the individual funds available to choose from and how to decide which one(s) are right for you.

What is a Makerspace?

Makerspaces are unstructured fabrication labs outfitted with design software and state-of-the-art tools, appealing to a diverse spectrum of interests. Miramar’s Makerspace provides an educationally enriched, collaborative inspired environment, encouraging multidisciplinary innovation and prototyping of ideas through hands-on creativity.

Miramar Station Library is the first across all installations to create a dedicated, unstructured design space with the intent to nurture unfulfilled potential, explore emerging technologies, and encourage entrepreneurial, scientific, and engineering hands-on learning.   This state-of-the-art design space cultivates communication and advancement of ideas between diverse groups and disciplines where creations are brought to life. Our goal is to transform drawing board ideas into actual working models.


Why create a Makerspace in the Library?

Both the library and the Makerspace work collectively to provide free resources and open access to tools and technology, bridging the gap between users and projects. The Makerspace provides a hands-on approach to learning where users develop new skills through experimentation, research, and the process of making. By bringing people together from diverse disciplines, new perspectives as well as innovative solutions evolve.

As an open, active, democratic space, Miramar Station Library provides an inclusive, learning environment where people make something personally meaningful to themselves. Seating and workspaces are flexible, mobile, and inviting.

The MCAS Miramar Station Library invites all active-duty members, reservists, retirees [USMC, Navy, Army, Air Force, and Coast Guard], civilian employees [GS, NAF, CTR] and dependents to Miramar Station Library’s Makerspace.

Cultivate creativity and innovation in art, music, literature, and technology. Support potential advancements in aspects of the Marine Corps and Marine Air-Ground Task Force Readiness.

The Library is dedicated to the US Marine Corps by challenging and developing our patrons’ creativity and problem-solving skills while highlighting the value of collaboration and experimentation. WHERE:
Makerspace room in the Library @ The HUB

WHAT:
Enjoy learning and creating with a variety of equipment and tools such as our 3D printers, laser cutter, vinyl cutter, sewing machine, computers, virtual reality, STEAM activities, traditional crafts and more.

HOW:
(1) If you are not a library account holder yet, please register with the Library Staff at the Circulation Desk.
(2) Next, if it’s your first time, fill and sign the “Makerspace Usage Agreement and Waiver Form” on the iPad.
(3) Let the staff know which Makerspace item/equipment you would like to use and we will guide you accordingly.


MORE GUIDELINES

  • Use of equipment and services, especially 3D printing and laser etching, take time. Please contact us to set-up a schedule in order to complete your projects in a timely manner (PH: 858-307-8358 | miramarmakers@gmail.com).
  • Patrons are encouraged to bring their own materials especially if they wish to use the 3D printers, laser etcher, vinyl cutters, sewing and embroidery machines. Example of said materials include PLA 3D printer filament, wood items within 20 x 12 x 1.5 inches, adhesive and heat transfer vinyl, fabric, sewing and embroidery threads and more.
  • All Makerspace items are to remain inside the Makerspace room.
  • Let’s help each other keep the Makerspace room clean and orderly.
  • Please handle all Makerspace items with care.
  • Maintain professional behavior at all times.
  • Children 9 and below must be supervised.
  • For ages 17 and below, certain items/equipment require parent and/or staff supervision.
  • In case of incidents relating but not limited to injury, loss or damage, please inform the Library Staff immediately.
  • When in doubt, ask your friendly Library Staff.

Education Center – MCAS Miramar

The Education Center has two higher learning institutions that offer a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses. These institutions offer programs aboard the military installation, online, and on campus locations in the local area.


New Postsecondary Complaint System (PECS)
Who should submit a complaint?  If you or your family member receives active duty military Tuition Assistance or is a Military Spouse Career Advancement Accounts (MyCAA) Scholarship recipient, and are experiencing problems with your school, you are encouraged to submit feedback at the PECS site

Testing Programs
The Education Center offers a variety of tests, free of charge, to eligible patrons. Please contact the testing office at smbmiramartesting@usmc.mil with any questions or for more information. Tests offered include:

  • Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE)
  • Military Classification Exams (AFCT, DLPT, DLAB, OPI)
  • Air University (SNCOA, CDC, etc.)
  • SAT (expected to resume October 2020)
  • FAA A&P Certification Testing
  • Free Distance Learning Proctoring Services

CLEP, DSST & Pearson Vue Testing is offered through National University. To schedule a CLEP or DSST follow these instructions. Tuition Assistance
Military Tuition Assistance is available to eligible active duty Marines Corps personnel. The Tuition Assistance Program FY maximum is $4,500 per year, $250 per semester credit hour. First time TA users must complete the JKO “Higher Education Preparation” course prior to using TA.

Military Academic Skills Program (MASP)
The Military Academic Skills Program (MASP) has come to a halt this Fiscal Year (FY) due to unforeseen circumstances. We are doing our due diligence to get it back up and running in the future. Joint Services Transcript (JST)
The JST (formerly SMART) is a record of each Service Member’s military training for which the American Council on Education (ACE) recommends college credits.  Service Members can get a copy of their JST at the Education Center or online by clicking [ here ]. 


The United Services Military Apprenticeship Program (USMAP)
USMAP is a formal military training program that provides active duty Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard Service Members the opportunity to improve their job skills and to complete their civilian apprenticeship requirements while on active duty.  The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) provides the nationally recognized Certificate of Completion of Apprenticeship upon completion of the program.  USMAP requires no off duty hours. It combines on-the-job training and related technical instruction to allow members to achieve status as a journeyman in their MOS field, enhancing job skills and showing motivation for more challenging military assignments. The Children’s Library, a highlight and popular area within the main Library, offers programs daily, encompassing a celebrated annual Summer Reading Program, weekly sign language; early literacy; music, song, and dance; STEAM classes, 3D printing events, and more!

Meaning, at that instance, our brains are under-performing compared to performance when we are happy or positive. There are times when this reaction is necessary, but it can become the norm if it is the only condition in which we constantly function.

Outside of those moments, when Marines can take a step back out of the stress and into a more positive mindset or environment, they can capitalize on increased performance, productivity, innovation, and are more open to new ways of doing things.

When primed to be positive, a team will be able to build more intellectual, social, and physical resources they can rely on in the future. Biologically, being happy not only makes people feel good, it also dials up the learning center of the brain and aids in organizing new information, retaining it longer, and facilitating faster retrieval later on. Positivity makes and sustains new neural connections, which allows us to think more quickly and creatively, become more skilled at complex analysis and problem solving, and see and invent new ways of doing things.

As if those benefits were not enough, the Army has done a comprehensive evaluation of Soldier and Family Fitness in conjunction with positive psychology. The results revealed that exposure to this type of training increased various aspects of the Soldier’s resilience and psychological health, which in turn, appeared to be associated with a reduced likelihood of receiving a diagnosis for a mental health problem (ie. Anxiety, depression, or PTSD). Moreover, the findings provided evidence that Soldiers exposed to the training were diagnosed with substance abuse problems at a significantly lower rate than Soldiers who were not exposed to the training.

5 Languages of Appreciation in the Workplace
Want to increase productivity and job satisfaction amongst employees? Studies show that the biggest factor influencing employees is whether they feel their supervisor and co-workers appreciate their contributions. In this workshop, we will help you identify the five languages of appreciation in order to be able to understand and speak your co-worker or staff member’s language.

Emergency Preparedness
Ready for the zombie apocalypse? What about earthquakes or wild fires? What will happen to your family, dog, or things if evacuation occurs? Natural and man-made hazards are a real threat to the readiness of you and your family. It is important that Marines and their families prepare themselves for all types of emergencies to increase their personal sense of security, peace of mind, and readiness of life outside of duty.

During this workshop, participants will learn actions that should be taken to be informed and prepared in the event an emergency occurs.

Family Care Plan
Spouses, children, pets oh my! The list can be long of all the roles a Marine has outside of the Marine Corps. How are those holes covered when a Marine leaves with short notice? Who will provide care for a single Marine’s pet? Who will help a spouse who breaks a leg? Who cares for children if both spouses have to deploy? If not prepared with a Family Care Plan, this can add stress and distraction from the mission for the Marine. The Family Care Plan is an essential part of military readiness that helps Marines focus on their job and mission during deployment, mobilization, training, or other times when duty calls. This workshop will help Marines and their families with the basics of a Family Care Plan.

Social Networking Safety
We all know loose lips sink ships, but there are many more dangers than just on the internet. From hackers running off with your entire boy band MP3 collection, to identity theft, home burglary, and personal safety issues – the threats are real and can materialize from social networking pitfalls. This workshop offers information on how to protect yourself and ways to stay safe on the internet and on social networking sites.

Safe and Sound at Home
Do you run with headphones in? Are you on your phone when walking to your car at night? How do you validate a person showing up to do a “service call”? What if some of our everyday habits are actually compromising our safety? Are you doing everything in your power to stay safe?

The Marine Corps strives to support the loved ones of wounded or deceased service members, and many families still do not know what is involved in getting their Marine home, nor what benefits and services are available to them. Not having knowledge of this process can make it appear complex and frightening to loved ones. This workshop will help minimize stress and confusion by providing a brief overview on the casualty process.

It is designed to be preventative in nature by teaching and demonstrating positive, proactive ways to build a healthy, lasting relationship.

Married 4 Life
This fun interactive workshop, using the strong, evidence-based PREP 8.0 model, is designed to help couples achieve their goals in relationships and family. The curriculum is designed to build on the existing strengths of the couple and add critical life and relationship skills that will help participants to create safer, more stable couple relationships.

By emphasizing a couple’s strengths and addressing the vulnerabilities couples face as challenges that can be overcome, the learning model employed in the PREP Approach is educational, with the focus on teaching couples the kinds of attitudes and actions that make for relational success.

While couples do a great deal of work and reflection together, an emphasis is placed on what the individual thinks, does, and reacts to since couples are only as healthy as the individuals that comprise them.

This program is well received by couples who have been together for some time; who may be in distress; and who are just starting long-term commitment.

How to Avoid Falling for a Jerk/Jerkette
Based on years of research on marital and premarital happiness, this workshop will help participants break destructive dating patterns that prevent them from finding the love they deserve. Topics include asking the right questions to inspire meaningful, revealing conversations with your partner and how to resolve some of their own emotional baggage to prepare them for a healthy relationship.

Although disagreements and anger are a normal part of life, how you express that anger can have a very detrimental effect on your relationship with others. This workshop provides education on the dynamics of anger and offers a variety of acceptable coping strategies to handle angry feelings and behaviors.

Learn useful skills to constructively manage conflict. Most of us can think of a time when we didn’t handle conflict very well. This class will boost your confidence in effective conflict management. it’s hard to manage what we don’t understand.
